A small meerkat figure with a tiny backpack on its back stands upright on the brick base of the clinic fence — alert, head tilted slightly, just as real meerkats do.

The backpack is a loving, meaningful detail: Kolodko created the figure in September 2022 for the Szurikáta Foundation for children with diabetes, marking the 100th anniversary of the first lifesaving insulin treatment given to a child (1922). The backpack recalls that children with type 1 diabetes must always carry their ’hand luggage’ (glucose meter, insulin, glucose tablets) with them. The meerkat becomes an encouraging, everyday companion.

Deliberately placed at the eye level of young patients, the meerkat feels like a gentle, curious welcome in a place tied to worry for many families — one of Kolodko’s most touching placements in all of Budapest.
