this dog is one of two statues in the group — the second shows three puppies in a basket (see 'Dog Market: The Puppy Basket'). The group is an official commission from the Buda Castle District Council.

The saying comes from a folk tale about King Matthias Corvinus: disguised as a traveler, the king meets a poor farmer with weak oxen whose wealthy neighbor refuses to help. Matthias advises him to sell the oxen and buy mangy dogs instead, then secretly has noblemen buy them up at inflated prices. When the greedy rich man hears of this, he buys the finest dogs in the area and brings them to Buda too, only to be chased off with the phrase that became proverbial: luck doesn’t repeat itself for the greedy.

AddressOn the curbstones of the small square at the corner of Batthyány utca/Hattyú utca, in front of the Vízivárosi Klub.
