A visibly exhausted Roman legionary lies relaxed on the stone wall, cradling a wine amphora in his arm. Óbuda sits atop the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Aquincum, which flourished here from the 1st to the 4th century AD. The statue is found in the military amphitheater (not to be confused with the larger civilian amphitheater further north) — right of the entrance, near the southern end of the retaining wall.

With this figure, Kolodko links Budapest’s historical heritage with a wink: even Rome’s toughest legionaries once succumbed to Hungarian wine. A humorous nod to the region’s deep winemaking tradition, dating back to antiquity.

The legionary even has a twin: the year before (2021), Kolodko had already installed an identical statue in the Roman amphitheater of Pula, Croatia — a separate, earlier installation, not a joint act, but the same legionary at two former outposts of the same empire.

AddressEntrance on the west side; the statue is in the southwest interior of the military amphitheatre.
