Kermit the Frog, created by Jim Henson in 1955, sits alone on cold paving stones, head tilted slightly – right at the foot of Liberty Square, one of Budapest's most historically contested sites. Here the monumental Soviet memorial, the American Embassy, and the memorial to the victims of the German occupation stand close together.

In the middle of it all sits Kermit, watching the absurd coexistence of irreconcilable political symbols on one patch of ground. A second, quieter point: frog legs first appeared on Hungarian menus in the late 19th century. Budapest has taken Kermit to heart nonetheless – in winter, residents regularly tie a hand-knitted scarf around him, much like Mr. Bean's teddy bear.

AddressBy the railing opposite the café on Szabadság tér, often with a hand-knitted scarf in winter.
